Jorge Luis Borges  Fictions Fictions  is  a collection of short stories published in 1944, by the Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges. This short stories are know for their fantasy, but Borges renews the genre creating what he calls "philosophy-fiction". Pierre Menard, Author of the   Quixote One of my favorite short stories is "Pierre Menard, Author of the   Quixote".  You can read the   English version here : http://hispanlit.qwriting.qc.cuny.edu/files/2011/06/Borges-Pierre-Menard.pdf It is the  life sketch and the work of the imaginary writer Pierre Menard, a french writer in the 30's, who tries to rewrite the Cervantes'  Quixote. This short story is a literary criticism, that raises the questions of authorship, appropriation and  interpretation. First of all, the title of the novel seems very provocative, and full of sense, indeed, the word "author" comes from the Latin word "augere" (increase), so here Menard increases the sense, ...

Marcel Proust  In Search of Lost Time This book is composed by 7 tomes, written between 1913 an 1927. The book won the Prix Goncourt, a very know price in France.  The novel is a   roman à clef, which means real people or events appear with invented names more or less explicitly. The style of the book is know for its very long sentences which want to portray the creation spiral in the making and writing. Proust wants to reach the totality of reality that always manages to outrun the writer. He  attempts to capture life in motion. As the title suggests it, the book is also a reflection on time, and the incapacity to capture the present. The book is the realization of the theory he wrote in  Contre Sainte- Beuve.  In this essay he reply to the XIXth century literary critic Sainte-Beuve. Indeed Sainte-Beuve thought a writing could only be explained and analysed by the life of the author and the historical context. Proust explains this way of analyz...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !

Image
It's the cold time of the year again. Time to spend nice moments with our family. In Spain, and as I heard in Poland too, Christmas is not over till the 6th of January. That day the three kings come on their camels to bring the Christmas gifts. There is a procession in every city for the children. Were people disguised with Christmas costumes in big chars throw candies and other small gifts.  We had a Christmas meeting with the other volunteers, were we tried the typical food of this period in Poland. I was very happy to notice that most of the meals were vegetarian since the tradition is to not eat meat during those days. So I could try everything ! We also did a secret Santa, where everyone had to bring a small gift and received one too. Sylwia giving out some gifts Bartek and Melina opening gifts with Christmas cards We also had, with Nicole, the volunteer working in the Cultural Center, a Christmas meal with the people working either in the Cultural Center and Library. There wa...

CZEŚĆ ! I'm Chl éo, my mother in Hungarian, my father is Spanish. I lived for 18 years in Valencia in Spain, but I moved to Toulouse (France) for my studies. I studied a multidisciplinary course with literature, mathematics, sociology, economy, history, geography, philosophy and English and Spanish actuality.  Since really like books I decided to work as a volunteer in a library. But for me volunteering was also about moving to a new country and discover a whole new culture with its language, life style, arts, beliefs and traditions. That's how I ended up in Pomiech ówek.  Pomiech ówek's park After living in big cities I enjoy being in a smaller town. Moreover if I miss the big city atmosphere I can go to Warsaw which is only 40 minutes away by train. Warsaw Warsaw Warsaw During the first days we settled in, with my flatmate Nicole in El źbieta's house, our land lady. We the met the other volunteers from the Stowarzysznie Promocji Wolontariatu organisation....

Dziękuję Polska!

The last 12 months were intense for me and it's unreal to look back and  put all of it into perspective.  It feels both like a lifetime and the blink of an eye.                        I can't believe we're leaving already.                                                                          This has truly been one of the best years of my life, and this experience was for sure the best conscious choice I ever made.                                                                  In a sense, applying for this project and coming here saved me from being stuck  i...

PROJECT UPDATE

Project Update Hey everyone! I know, it's been quite some time since I posted. Here's a little video I made during a Mid Term Training a couple weeks ago. We were asked to display our typical afternoon activities in our workplace so we could share our experience with the group. Hope you enjoy this little insight, though it's just a small part of what we're usually up to. I'll have to update this blog by the end of August for sure, to provide a complete retrospective on my project, and I'm already writing it so catch you soon! :') alice

Illustrated Chapter 1 : Roald Dahl

Image
Roald Dahl was my favourite writer when I was a child. And if I think about it now, he still is.  I’ve always been in constant research for something more than the ordinary, and perhaps this has something to do with my name, that’s very predictable! I have the clearest memory of sneaking down the stairs in the middle of a sleepless night at my uncles’ house and choosing Matilda from the bookshelves in the dark living room. I had just learned to read on my own and there was a magical haze blurring the borders of reality; I was completely captured inside that familiar yet scary universe inside my warm blanket shelter on the armchair, avidly turning the pages until sunrise.  As soon as I finished I ran to the library and borrowed as many books by him as I could, and kept going back and forth to read them again!  His outrageous, eccentric stories ignited a long lasting love for reading that genuinely applies to the whole spectrum of storytelling, from visual arts to film to m...
